I paint images of recognisable objects (often items of clothing) on isolated, unadorned grounds.
Many of the images with which I work recall my prior career as a solicitor in the City – formal, polished shoes; ties; shirts and suits. There is an element of reflective nostalgia. They are painted with a sense of affection whilst, at the same time, they are designed to bring into play for the viewer issues such as loss of identity, uniformity (and clothes as uniform) and containment.
The sense of isolation reflected in these City paintings also informs my more recent paintings of single trees and other "objects"
I hope, however, that each viewer will bring their own associations with them when viewing these images of ordinary things. |
